Little Things: Marathon Monday!

Monday was the day. The Holy Grail of marathons. A beloved day for this city. Marathon Monday! It was the first time in a few years I was off so I was STOKED to spend the day at Mile 24 cheering on the masses.
I got down to Beacon St. early to stake out a spot. It was great to see the wheelchair and pushchair racers zoom by. Then came the elites. American Meb Keflezighi ran his last Boston. He won in 2014, the year after the bombings and the crowd went nuts when he ran through, even though he was far off the lead.
Soon after the elites zip through, the masses begin to make their way to the finish. The crowd builds, the cheers grow louder and louder, and the energy is amazing.
I spent most of the day camped at Mile 24. Shouting "2 more miles" or "you are doing this" there is nothing more amazing than an exhausted runner giving you a fist bump as they hear you shout their name or cheer them on. This race is Boston's race and we are all in it together! Boston Strong!!

Ready. Set. Go!

Tell me I'm alive...
I'm running through these walls...

{Believe - Mumford & Sons}

Another BAA 5k is in the books! 1 race down in my 2017 BAA Distance Medley journey!

Saturday was the perfect day for a 5k. Crisp blue skies, ideal temps, abundant sunshine, and a slight breeze.

It felt good to be a repeat runner. I knew what to expect. I knew the course. I got downtown nice and early, found a few people I knew running, warmed up, and got into position.

I just took off over the starting line, really mentally determined to have a PR. Emily and Teddy were there at mile 1 - and it was great to see a friendly face. Heading into the tunnel I felt great, no stopping, no breathing issues, amazing energy.

Then the right on Hereford -- left on Boylston. On Marathon Monday that signals the literal home stretch. You see the tangent lines, you see the finish line, and you just run home. Saturday happened to be the 4th anniversary of the marathon bombing, so running that stretch was super emotional!

From the marathon finish line to the 5k finish was another 3/4 of a mile or so. As I got close I just sprinted. There is a nice crowd there cheering and that literally carried me down the stretch were I booked it home.

Official time: 28:46 - PR by 2 minutes!! I have never run negative splits and ran 2!! Not a bad way to kick off my medley.

After I finished, Jenny and I walked back down Boylston to the expo and finish line. I have a big goal to toe the line in Hopkinton in 2018 - so knowing that finish line could be all mine in a year is beyond amazing - we shall see!!

But for now...it's onto my next race. I am so ready to be back in real training mode and can't wait for the next starting line!

The Good. The Random. The Fun. v. 16

The Good:
Today is Marathon Monday! The happiest day in Boston. I was down by the finish line Friday to get my Distance Medley hoodie and just soaked up the excitement and energy. Then, being down on Boylston on Saturday - the 4th anniversary of the bombing - was super emotional. There were touching tributes at the two bomb sites and so many people out and about and living life, it just shows that those two men failed - we are Boston Strong!

The Random:
It is not Passover until I have my matza farfel with strawberries!

The Fun:
Beverly Cleary would have turned 101 this past Wednesday. She lived in Portland and set her stories there, so I was so excited to finally go see the statues of Ribsy, Ramona, and Henry - and on her birthday no less!

The Grotto

Yesterday, Noam, mom, and I went to the Grotto for some time in nature. The Grotto is a Catholic shrine and botanical garden set on a cliff right in Portland, it was a stunning retreat right in the city limits.
It was so peaceful up on the upper level. We walked the path, walked the labyrinth, and marveled at the blooming plants. I cannot get over how lush and green it was and how calming and serene it was there. A beautiful place to spend some time!
